Raised in Scarborough, editing came to me in an unlikely way, whether it was from the influence of my mother’s love of documentaries, or being entranced by watching music videos on BET during my childhood, it was something that I didn’t imagine being a career.
Storytelling is a main strength of mine, and a staple in editing that allows a world of opportunity for growth, both personally and professionally. With hip hop, R&B, reggae, dancehall, jazz, and classical music being primary influences in my life, I apply that same rhythmic approach in my editing style.
While starting off as an Assistant Editor working on a variety of shows like Lost & Sold, BBQ Crawl, Open House Overhaul, and Science Max my first crack at editing for broadcast came in 2017 when I was at VICE (Canada) for two shows, Funny How and Mister Tachyon: On the Edge of Science, respectively. I then went on to edit four episodes of Carnival Eats season six. I’ve also cut trailers for independent films, such as Brown Girl Begins and Crown & Anchor, and I was part of the editing team for Guantanamo’s Child: Omar Khadr, which was nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy Award.
Part of my journey is to help promote diversity in the edit suite because there’s not a great deal of representation and it’s important to continue encouraging progressive strides to be made both on camera and behind them.
There’s always something new to learn and a challenge to attain and conquer, and I’m always looking for the next one.
